This is also the case with child-minders who offer childcare in their own homes. There is, however, no requirement for nannies or au pairs who provide childcare in your home to register with anyone at all but Ofsted does operate a voluntary register for nannies.
In order to register:
You can either hire a nanny who is already Ofsted registered or ask them to register when you offer them the role or thereafter. Please note that these registrations will be on the voluntary register. There is no legal requirement for nannies to be Ofsted registered.
The registration process can be initiated online via the Ofsted Online Portal. In order to access the Ofsted’s Online Portal, https://online.ofsted.gov.uk/OnlineOfsted/default.aspx. If he/she doesn’t already have one, a nanny will need to create a personal Government Gateway account. Once they have logged into their Gateway account they can then access the Ofsted Online Portal to begin registration. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the Ofsted helpline on 0300 123 1231.
To be able to claim the childcare element of working tax credits or childcare vouchers, parents must use nannies that are Ofsted registered. As it is the parents who benefit from the Ofsted registration, it is usually them who pay for the costs. Please note that Ofsted registration is considered to be a benefit in kind and therefore should be declared as such on your tax return.
